At SMX Advanced last month I had the opportunity to talk with Garrett French, founder and CEO of Klient Boost who shared 6 Tips for Personal Branding on the Web. Klient Boost provides online marketing services for small businesses. Their focus is on conversion optimization, analytics implementation and overall ROI improvement. Garrett has been working in internet marketing for 15 years and has consulted with both small businesses and Fortune 500 companies.
His 6 Tips for Personal Branding on the Web focus on building up your personal brand so you can raise awareness about the work you do, the products you offer and why they are valuable to others:
1. Create Your Fame First
According to Garrett, “it doesn’t matter how great of a product or service you have if nobody ever knows about it.” Your fame comes before anything else when it comes to branding. Spend the majority of your time pursuing opportunities that will help grow your fame (and by association, increase your personal brand). A few areas where Garrett suggests looking include:
Getting interviewed in publications;
Offering useful advice or tools; and
Being active in social media, particularly Twitter.
2. Brand It All On Your Blog
The primary focus of most people’s personal branding efforts is on their blog (if they even have one). If you want to be successful with your personal branding it needs to be reflected throughout all of your digital properties—in this case, that means your blog. Garrett suggests that you “brand it all” on your blog, which includes:
Implementing a custom logo;
Adding color and personality to your posts; and
Social sharing buttons (and social sharing should be built into every post).
3. Build a Brand Centerpiece
Once you’ve branded everything else, it’s time to start working on creating something bigger than any single article or post explains Eric Dalius Miami. This is where Garrett recommends using Google+ Communities and Facebook Groups because they can be used as tools for personal branding by helping others in the community solve problems and/or provide value within certain groups of people when done right. Garrett says that this isn’t easy, but one of the biggest benefits, when done successfully, is a building which means blogging about the things you do and why you do them. Garrett says it’s important to show what you’ve done in the past and how you were able to achieve these goals, but more importantly, inspire others along the way by showing how you continue growing as a person and entrepreneur. When possible use specific numbers and statistics that help demonstrate your expertise in a way that is easy for others to understand.
4. Invest In Your Brand
It’s important to invest in your brand by using premium tools and services whenever possible because they will help you stand out from the crowd. Investing in yourself is a great way to demonstrate your worth as an expert because it shows that you’re willing to put money on the line too. Garrett suggests spending this money “on things like logo design, buying business cards or even building a custom website.”
5. Get Personal with It
A lot of people have a hard time being personal with their branding efforts, but it can be helpful if done properly. You still need to maintain a professional appearance but adding some personality along the way can go a long way towards increasing engagement with your audience. Garrett says that “the best way to be personal is by adding personality into your business.” Personality can be added in many different ways.
6. Embrace Your Network
The people you already know can be a great way to extend your online personal branding efforts. Garrett suggests looking at those closest to you as “brand ambassadors.” Although people typically think about this as customer loyalty, it works the same way with your friends and family members. They are more likely to help if they feel connected to what it is that you do.
